Internationally, clinical services are under pressure to reduce the use of coercion. The aim of the study was to examine how psychiatric nurses and social and healthcare assistants perceive conflicts and their use of coercion and restrictive measures in forensic psychiatric care. A total of 24 semi‑structured interviews were conducted with staff in forensic psychiatry and analysed using thematic analysis. The results point to a dynamic model that explains how tolerance for potential conflict situations shifts depending on each staff member’s perceptions of patients and colleagues, as well as their relationships.
